An Introduction Into Essay
Essay, same with dissertations and thesis are all types of academic documents, produced by students and based on a specific subject matter. They are used as a means of determining how well a student is performing and understand in a certain subject area. Essays, can also creates the development of students skills and knowledge.
According to online dictionary, essay defines as; '(a) a short literary composition on a literary subject, usually presenting the personal view of the author, (b) something resembling such a composition.'
An essay has characteristic, such as:
- Essay is literary composition; means that they are written documents.
- Essay reflects the author's point of view.
- Essay is based on research.
- Essay discussing some form of topic or subject matter.
- Essay as a means of academic testing.
So what is the difference between essay and dissertation or thesis?
Some of the main differences between this three academic assignment document types are:
- Essays are generally shorter than dissertations and thesis.
- Essays are usually used to explore an argument or to provide more information on a particular subject, meanwhile a dissertations are usually to find new evidence about a specific subject matter, as the definition states, to 'advance a new point of view' or to draw new conclusion. This means that dissertations are creating the research pool on a specific subject, but essay is simply discussing research that is already available.
- The level of exploration and investigation into a particular subject matter is greater for dissertations or thesis, so the document is generally longer than that of an essay.
Writing an essay is not easy when compared with writing a fiction article. Writing essay is a scientific paper based on theory of knowledge that already exists. So it needs not only imagination, but also knowledge on a subject matter.
